In this week’s edition of The Political Edge, we take a look at how House Democrats representing districts carried by President Trump voted on yesterday’s articles of impeachment.
The table below highlights each member’s vote and is organized by Trump’s margin of victory in 2016 (largest to smallest). It also includes the partisan voting index of the member’s district (which measures how strongly a district leans toward a particular party compared to the nation as a whole) and the current rating of the race as determined by the Cook Political Report.
Of the 31 Democrats in Trump districts, 28 voted for both articles of impeachment. Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), who represents Maine’s Second District, voted to impeach the president on the grounds of abuse of power but voted against articles alleging obstruction of Congress. Rep. Colin Peterson (D-MN) voted against both articles as did Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ), although Van Drew is expected to switch parties and become a Republican.
Of the 29 Democrats who voted for impeachment (including Golden), 16 represent districts that President Trump carried by four points or more in 2016. Thirteen of the Democrats who voted for impeachment won their election by a margin of five points or less, but the president outperformed all but one of those thirteen in 2016.
