PRESIDENTIAL

The Hill: “Dems Worry Race For Ideological Purity Will Fracture Field” (The Hill, 4/10/19)

A new poll released from Morning Consult shows former Vice President Joe Biden leading the 2020 primary field with 32% support from Democratic primary voters. He is followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (23%), Sen. Kamala Harris (9%), Beto O’Rourke (8%), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (7%). (Morning Consult, 4/8/19)

Sen. Elizabeth Warren reported raising $6 million in the first quarter, receiving 213,000 contributions from 135,000 donors, with an average contribution of about $28. She finished the quarter with $11 million on hand after transferring $10.4 million from her Senate campaign. (The Wall Street Journal, 4/10/19)

  • Amy Klobuchar raised more than $5.2 million for her presidential bid since launching her campaign in mid-February, her campaign said. Klobuchar finished the first quarter with $7 million in the bank after adding in an additional $3 million from her Senate campaign last year. (Politico, 4/8/19)
  • Cory Booker has raised $5.1 million in the two months since he announced his 2020 plans, the presidential candidate’s campaign said Sunday. Booker’s campaign said 82 percent of the donors gave to the senator for the first time and the average online contribution was $34. (The Washington Post, 4/7/19)

Sen. Bernie Sanders unveiled the latest version of his Medicare for All this week. (The Associated Press, 4/10/19)

Despite the “personal space” issue, former Vice President Joe Biden is reportedly planning to announce his presidential candidacy later this month. (Axios, 4/10/19)

New York Magazine wonders, “How Late Can Stacey Abrams Wait To Launch A Presidential Candidacy?” (New York Magazine, 4/9/19)


SENATE ALABAMA

Former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville is running for the U.S. Senate as a Republican. (AL.com, 4/6/19)

Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, meanwhile, said he is not planning to cross state lines to run for the U.S. Senate seat. (AL.com, 4/8/19)

Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth (R-AL) also confirmed that he will not seek the Republican nomination for Senate. (Yellow Hammer, 4/11/19)


SENATE ARIZONA

The DSCC endorsed Mark Kelly’s campaign in Arizona this week, the committee’s first endorsement of the 2020 cycle. (Politico, 4/8/19)

SENATE COLORADO

Sen. Cory Gardner raised $2 million in the first quarter of this year and has more than $3.4 million on hand. (Politico, 4/11/19)

Just over a month after she launched her campaign, Danielle Kombo has withdrawn from the 2020 Democratic U.S. Senate primary and declared she’s backing Stephany Rose Spaulding, the Democrat who tried to oust Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) last fall. (Colorado Politics, 4/5/19)


SENATE GEORGIA

Teresa Tomlinson (D-GA), the former mayor of Columbus, filed to create an exploratory committee with the FEC for a possible U.S. Senate run. Despite the creation of the committee, Tomlinson has continued to express support for Stacey Abrams, who is still considering whether to run for Senate. Tomlinson’s new committee allows her to begin fundraising and building a campaign apparatus to be ready to officially run should Abrams pass on the race. (Politico, 4/5/19)

A new poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution found that Stacey Abrams approval ratings have dipped since January. 52% of those surveyed had positive views of her in January. That number dropped to 45% and her unfavorable rating grew from 40% to 45%. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 4/11/19)

  • The same poll showed Sen. David Perdue, with about the same approval rating as he did in January, with 47% of Georgia voters rating him favorably, compared with 45 percent at the beginning of the year. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 4/11/19)

State Sen. Jen Jordan (D-GA), told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution she wasn’t closing the door on a potential campaign. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 4/9/19)


SENATE IOWA

Sen. Joni Ernst raised $1.7 million in the first quarter of this year and has more than $2.8 million on hand. (Politico, 4/11/19)


SENATE KANSAS

State Senate President Susan Wagle (R-KS) said she would not run for reelection to the state legislative chamber again and said it was “likely” she would run statewide for the seat being vacated by Sen. Pat Roberts. (Leavenworth Times, 4/3/19)


SENATE MAINE

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) raised more than $1.5 million in the first quarter of this year for her reelection campaign, nearly matching the $1.8 million she raised in the final three months of 2018, the best fundraising quarter of her career. Collins ended the quarter with $3.8 million in cash on hand. (Politico, 4/7/19)

Sen. Joe Manchin endorsed Sen. Collin’s reelection campaign, she has not officially announced that she’s running for another term. (The Washington Post, 4/11/19)

Susan Rice, former national security adviser to President Barack Obama, said that she will not be running for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Collins. (The Huffington Post, 4/11/19)


SENATE MICHIGAN

Sen. Gary Peters raised nearly $1.9 million in the first quarter of the year, his campaign announced, and he ended the quarter with more than $3 million. (Politico, 4/10/19)


SENATE NEW HAMPSHIRE

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen announced she raised $1.4 million in the first quarter of 2019 and has $1.5M on hand. (ABC-Manchester, 4/10/19)

Gov. Chris Sununu has reportedly told key Republicans within the past several days that he intends to seek a third term as governor and does not intend to run for the U.S. Senate in 2020. (ABC-Manchester, 4/10/19)


SENATE NEW MEXICO

Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver (D-NM) is considering a run for U.S. Senate, setting up a possible 2020 Democratic primary race against U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján. (The Associated Press, 4/11/19)

Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM) announced she will not run for U.S. Senate. (The Associated Press, 4/10/19)


SENATE NORTH CAROLINA

Despite previous apprehension, State Sen. Jeff Jackson (D-NC) reportedly said that he is taking “a serious look” at running for U.S. Senate. (ABC-Charlotte, 4/10/19)


SENATE TEXAS

Politico: “Democrats Brace For Massive Primary Clash In Texas” (Politico, 4/11/19)


HOUSE NATIONAL

Justice Democrats, the grassroots group that helped elect Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Congress, launched a new website in response to the DCCC’s announcement that it would not do business with political consultants and firms that help candidates challenging Democratic members of Congress next year. The site is designed to help progressive primary challengers get the communications, advertising and digital resources they need to mount campaigns. (Reuters, 4/5/19)

HOUSE ALABAMA

AL-01: Local businessman Wes Lambert (R-AL) is expected to announce his candidacy to succeed Rep. Bradley Byrne, joining State Rep. Chris Pringle and Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl in the race. (Yellow Hammer, 4/10/19)


HOUSE CALIFORNIA

CA-04: The Sacramento Bee: “Here’s Who Could Challenge Tom McClintock For Congress In 2020” (The Sacramento Bee, 4/11/19)

CA-25: Republicans recruited Mike Garcia, a fighter pilot and first-generation American, to challenge freshman Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) in 2020. (The Hill, 4/10/19)


HOUSE ILLINOIS

IL-13: Democrat Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, who came within a percentage point of unseating Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) in 2018, will try once again to take the 13th Congressional District seat. (ABC-Springfield, 4/11/19)


HOUSE MICHIGAN

MI-06: State Rep. Jon Hoadley (D-MI) said he plans to challenge Rep. Fred Upton next year. (MLive, 4/8/19)


HOUSE NEBRASKA

NE-02: Dustin Sedoris (D-NE), a 27-year old Marine veteran, announced last week that he intends to seek the 2nd Congressional District nomination. (Omaha World Herald, 4/8/19)


HOUSE NEW JERSEY

NJ-07: State Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr. is expected to announce that he will challenge freshman Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ). Kean, who has won six races for the New Jersey Legislature by wide margins in a district that has become increasingly more Democratic, is widely viewed as a top-tier challenger to Malinowski. There are 5,066 more Republicans than Democrats in the district, which supported Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election by a 1 point margin. Malinowski beat former Rep. Leonard Lance last year by a 5 point margin. (New Jersey Globe, 4/8/19)

  • NJ-07: Former Rep. Leonard Lance ruled out a rematch with Malinowski and offered strong praise of Kean. (New Jersey Globe, 4/9/19)

HOUSE NEW MEXICO

NM-02: Chris Mathys (R-NM), a local businessman and Army veteran, has filed papers to run to unseat Rep. Xochitl Torres Small (D-NM). (The Associated Press, 4/10/19)

NM-03: Former CIA operative, author and activist Valerie Plame (D-NM) said last Friday she is considering a 2020 run for the open 3rd congressional seat in New Mexico. (The Associated Press, 4/5/19)


HOUSE NEW YORK

NY-01: Perry Gershon (D-NY), who narrowly lost a race to unseat Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) in November, formally launched another campaign to win the Democratic Party’s nomination for the seat. (East Hampton Star, 4/11/19)

NY-11: House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy met with former Rep. Michael Grimm, the former New York lawmaker and convicted felon eyeing a comeback in 2020. (The Hill, 4/10/19)

NY-15: City & State New York: “The Free-For-All To Replace Rep. Jose Serrano” (City & State New York, 4/5/19)

NY-18: Chele Farley, the Republican who lost the 2018 New York U.S. Senate race to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, announced she will challenge Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. (The Associated Press, 4/9/19)

NY-24: “Democrat Dana Balter, who lost a close race to Rep. John Katko last year, plans to announce next week whether she’ll seek a rematch next year. If Balter decides to run for Congress, she will have competition for the Democratic nomination – Navy veteran Roger Misso, decided to return to Central New York last month to run for Congress. HOUSE NORTH CAROLINA

NC-09: Democrat Dan McCready’s campaign says he has raised more than $1.6 million in campaign funds for a special election and ended the first quarter with $1.46M on hand. McCready had nearly $338,000 available at the end of 2018. (The Associated Press, 4/9/19)

NC-09: State Sen. Dan Bishop (R-NC) is launching the first television ad of the new race. It features Bishop standing next to inflatable clowns with the faces of Dan McCready and other Democratic figures including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi. The Bishop campaign said the ad-buy is districtwide and the cost is in the six-figure range. (ABC-Charlotte, 4/10/19)


HOUSE PENNSYLVANIA

PA-12: Republican Fred Keller has rolled out his first commercial for the special election to be held next month. The ad emphasizes Keller “hardscrabble roots.” (Pennsylvania Capital-Star, 4/10/19)


HOUSE TEXAS

TX-07: Former Bellaire Mayor Cindy Siegel resigned as second vice-chair of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County board this, citing an intention to run for U.S. Congress as her reason for leaving. If she files in her own district, she would be running against U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher. (Community Impact, 4/8/19)

TX-21: Former Texas state Senator and gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis (D-TX) said she is looking “very seriously” at challenging freshman Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) next year instead of running for Senate. (The Hill, 4/5/19)
