Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is in a tough spot. A Democrat running in a state Trump won by 19 points in 2016, McCaskill finds herself in a high wire act that must balance the criticism of Trump that Democrats expect and demand, while winning over independents by appearing to work with the president.
Few modern era politicians have been able to thread that needle, but McCaskill is certainly trying. Just last week, under the header of “Claire Gets Things Done,” her campaign issued a press release that tried to take credit for 23 bills signed by Trump. According to the release, McCaskill “helped draft, sponsored, or co-sponsored” all of these bills.
But a deeper dive into these bills reveals that McCaskill’s reelection campaign is using creative math and hoping most Missouri voters don’t know the rules and procedures used in the United States Senate.
